Pickleball

Pickleball for total beginners: the easiest team event to run

Small court. Underarm serve. Lots of laughing. Pickleball is the rare sport where the boss, the grad and the person who “doesn’t do sport” can all play together inside ten minutes.

If you’ve been hunting for a team event that isn’t another escape room or long lunch, try pickleball.

It mixes tennis, badminton and table tennis into one fast, social game. It suits all ages and skill levels, which is exactly what you want when your team ranges from 21 to 61.

Why pickleball works so well for teams

  • It’s quick to learn. The serve is underarm and the court is small. Most beginners are rallying within minutes.
  • It’s social by design. Doubles means four people on court, talking and laughing the whole time.
  • Skill gaps shrink. A fit 25-year-old doesn’t automatically beat a crafty 55-year-old.
  • It’s gentle on the body. Short court, short sprints, no tackling.
  • It’s indoors. At Camellia, rain and heat don’t matter.

A simple 2-hour team format

TimeWhat happens
0:00 to 0:15Welcome, paddles out, quick rules demo
0:15 to 1:15Round-robin doubles. Swap partners every game so everyone mixes
1:15 to 1:40Semi-finals and a final for the top pairs
1:40 to 2:00Awards, photos and food from the cafe

Keep score on a whiteboard. Give silly awards too, like best rally, best celebration and most improved.

The rules in 60 seconds

  1. Serve underarm, diagonally, from behind the baseline.
  2. The ball must bounce once on each side before anyone volleys.
  3. Don’t volley from the non-volley zone near the net, called “the kitchen”.
  4. In social games, play first to 11, win by 2.

That’s enough to start. Everyone picks up the rest by playing.

What you need and what it costs

  • Courts. One court fits four players at a time. For 16 to 20 people, book two or three courts and rotate.
  • Paddles and balls. Ask about equipment when you book, or bring your own.
  • Food. The on-site cafe can cater a light lunch or afternoon platter.

FAQs

Is pickleball good for team building?

Yes. Pickleball is quick to learn, played in doubles and suits all ages and fitness levels. That makes it one of the easiest ways to get a mixed team playing and laughing together within minutes, with no special skills needed.

How many people can play pickleball on one court?

Four people play doubles on one court at a time. For a team event, plan one court for every four to eight people and rotate players between games so everyone stays involved and nobody waits too long.

Do we need our own pickleball paddles?

Ask about equipment when you book your courts. If your group has its own paddles and balls, you’re welcome to bring them. Comfortable clothes and non-marking indoor shoes are all players need.
